A declaration has come from the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) that there will be no further extension after this weekend for concession passengers to apply for Smarter Cards.
Following a rush on its card collection centres, the State-run entity yesterday extended the deadline for the implementation of the cash less system on its buses. Concession passengers, including students, the elderly and the disabled, now have until Sunday to apply for and collect Smarter Cards. JUTC Chairman, Garnet Roper, has stated that no additional time will be given.
After the extension, passengers will only be able to access concession fares by using Smarter Cards. In the meantime, the JUTC Chairman says steps will be taken to prevent a repeat of the chaotic scenes at Smarter Card collection outlets. Just over 130-thousand applications have been received for Smarter Cards.
And the JUTC has announced plans for the introduction of a disposable fare card. Manager of Operations at the Half Way Tree Transport Centre, Lynval Thompson, explains that the card is designed for persons who may not be frequent users of the system, but who wish to use the service for a limited period.
