Three fisherman charged in relation to billion-dollar cocaine bust

By Warren Bertram

The three fishermen who were arrested in connection with last month's billion-dollar cocaine bust have been charged.

They are Omar Augustus Nugent of White River St. Ann; Josie Whyte of Stewart Town, St. Mary; and Delroy Anthony of Florence Hall, Trelawny.

The men were charged on the weekend with conspiracy, dealing in, possession, importation and transportation of cocaine.

They will return to court on January 11.

On Monday December 26, the fishermen were arrested when the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard intercepted a vessel off the coast of St. Thomas.

Some 521 kilogrammes of cocaine with a street value of $1.3 billion was seized on the fishing vessel.

The cocaine was reportedly being transported from Colombia.
