Three policemen injured during clash with armed robbers

Two policemen were shot on Friday afternoon after they responded to a robbery in Independence City in Portmore, St. Catherine. 
 
A third policeman was injured when he was run over by a car transporting the robbers. 
 
Their injuries are not considered life threatening. 
 
Hopton Nicholson, Operations Officer for the St. Catherine South Police, told Radio Jamaica News the officers had responded after a woman reported she was robbed. 
 
The police pursued the vehicle in which the robbers were travelling and intercepted it at a traffic light in Independence City. 
 
The robbers reportedly alighted their vehicle and forcibly took control of a taxi after pulling out the driver. 
 
However, the car crashed when they were trying to escape. 
 
The robbers then exited the vehicle and engaged the police in a shootout, injuring the cops. 
 
At the end of the clash, one of the robbers died and the other escaped. 
 
A firearm was recovered from the scene as well as stolen items. 
 
The vehicle in which the men were initially travelling had also been reported stolen.
