Three suspected of robbery in Portmore arrested

Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, head of the St. Catherine South Police

The St. Catherine South Police on Wednesday morning arrested three men suspected of carrying out a robbery in Independence City, Portmore.

Sometime after 4 o'clock, the police received information that men travelling in a car had committed a robbery.

A team intercepted the car in Marine Park.

The three occupants, who reportedly tried to elude the police, were apprehended.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News, Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, head of the St. Catherine South Police, said there has been an increase in criminal activities, including robberies in the division.

SSP Phillips is especially concerned that a number of the robberies are being committed by teenagers.

"I don't know if these persons are out of school and don't have much to do but we find an increase in youngsters being involved in criminal activities," he said, as he appealed to parents to "take charge of your youngsters, know their whereabouts during the days [and] find something constructive for them to do whilst they are out there on summer break."

SSP Phillips disclosed that more females are also getting involved in criminal activity and "moving with gangsters, especially in the Gregory Park area".

He again appealed for residents to help "save some of these youngsters from themselves".

The senior cop added that the police is committed to ensuring that for Jamaica's 60th year of independence, residents will be able to "celebrate with some amount of peace".
