Toll discount on North South highway to last only one month

The government has clarified the uncertainty which surrounds the discount on toll rates for use of  the newly opened North South Highway.

Transport Minister Mike Henry told RJR News that consultations with the developers will take place during the discount period which will only last a month.

"The discount is for one month from yesterday's date of opening and the month will be used to sit down with the developers of the road to discuss some of the issues in relation to the public's complaints   - one specifically will be the developmental plan along the road to increase the traffic," Henry said .

The discount was announced on Wednesday by Prime Minister Andrew Holness during the official opening of the highway.

At that time the Prime Minister did not indicate that the discount was temporary. The temporary rate reduction follows public outcry when the proposed rates were published last week.

At least one rate was as high as $3,700 .

The Transport Ministry says more than 450 responses were received from the public objecting to the proposed rates.
