UIC president arrested at anti-vaccination protest

Joseph Patterson, President of the United Independents' Congress (UIC), was arrested on Wednesday morning in downtown Kingston for acting in contravention of the Public Order Act.

The UIC is Jamaica's third registered political party.

Mr. Patterson had spearheaded a protest against the Government's COVID-19 vaccination programme, despite a warning from the police that no permit would be granted.

Scores of people, including members of the Rastafarian community, are taking part in the protest. This is despite the public gathering limit being 10 people.

The group marched to the Kingston Central Police Divisional Headquarters where Mr. Patterson is being detained and chanted, "Free Patterson".

The protest continues, but the police have moved the crowd away from the divisional headquarters.
