UK prime minister, chancellor fined for breaking lockdown rules

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak have been fined by police for breaking lockdown rules in Downing Street in June 2020.

Mr. Johnson, the chancellor and the prime minister's wife all received fixed penalty notices for attending a birthday gathering for the prime minister in Number 10.

As a result, Mr. Johnson became the UK's first serving prime minister to be sanctioned for breaking the law.

All three apologised, but opposition MPs say the prime minister and Mr. Sunak must quit.

Both Mr. Johnson and Mr. Sunak have rejected those calls, with Mr. Johnson saying he felt an even greater sense of obligation, while the chancellor said he was focused on delivering for the British people.
