JWU President Clifton Brown
The Jamaica Workers Union (JWU) which represents several categories of employees at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) is claiming that routine testing of staff for COVID-19 is not being done.
JWU President Clifton Brown says several orderlies from the Operating Theatre Department have fallen ill over the last week and a half with symptoms including loss of taste as well as aches and pains.
Mr. Brown said the orderlies were not tested for COVID-19.
"Significant numbers are falling ill that it is noticeable. But the thing I got from the chief delegate at KPH is that in a general way, the entire hospital staff is not being tested periodically, as they should be for the virus," he told Radio Jamaica News.
Mr. Brown said testing of staff at the KPH resumed after two doctors were diagnosed with the virus last week.
He is calling for healthcare workers to undergo "routine and periodic COVID-19 tests on the workers so that they can protect patients," especially in light of the spike in cases of the virus.
The Health Ministry on Sunday reported that seventeen healthcare workers have tested positive for COVID-19.
Some are employed to Kingston Public Hospital.
