Unruly taxi driver who tried to elude police charged

Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council

The taxi operator seen in a video speeding from the police while ignoring screaming passengers has been charged with several traffic violations.

He has been identified as 26-year-old Jamoy Pusey.

It's been revealed that Mr. Pusey has 19 unpaid traffic tickets.

Superintendent Aaron Fletcher, head of the St. Andrew North Police Division, told Radio Jamaica News that Mr. Pusey was released on station bail and is scheduled to appear before the Traffic Court later this month.

In the video, the driver is seen trying to flee from the police in the Mannings Hill area of St. Andrew as passengers vigorously plead for him to let them out of the vehicle.

As they scream for him to stop the car and release them, the driver can be heard saying, "Yow, mi nah gaah nuh jail and mi nah gi weh di man car suh easy".

Mr. Pusey continues his attempted getaway for another seven minutes, eventually stopping after the cops fire warning shots.

Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, has condemned the actions of the taxi driver and is calling for him to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Dr. Jones said he was "deeply disturbed by the level of anarchy" displayed by the driver, who placed the lives of his passengers at risk.

He said this kind of behaviour has been rampant in Jamaica for "far too long...and it needs to come to a stop".

Addressing the matter, he said, is critical in reducing crashes, considering there were 484 road fatalities last year.

Mr. Jones has urged persons to avoid taking robot taxis.
