UPDATE: Explosion at NMIA was simulation exercise, says AAJ

Alfred McDonald, Senior Director of Commercial Development and Planning at the AAJ

The Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) says Friday evening's incident at the Norman Manley International Airport was a simulation exercise.

First responders flocked to the ticketing area shortly after 7 o'clock.

Alfred McDonald, Senior Director of Commercial Development and Planning at the AAJ, had earlier told RJR News that the bag explosion was a specific and isolated incident.

However, speaking with RJR News later on Friday evening, he revealed that the explosion was a mock exercise.

"We received information subsequent to what I reported earlier that the exercise was a simulation exercise and it was certainly intended that the responders would not have been aware that it was a simulation exercise. Thankfully, therefore, what we had there was something that was under control," he asserted.

Flight operations at the airport were not interrupted by the exercise.
