A fire which damaged a section of the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston on Wednesday afternoon has been contained.
But according to the Jamaica Fire Brigade, it is still too early to determine what caused the blaze which started shortly before noon.
Emelio Ebanks, Public Relations Officer at the Brigade, told RJR News: "I am still waiting on the team to finish the exercise and then from there, in the wrapping up exercise, we'll hear from them what were the challenges that they were faced with."
The fire destroyed the George Davis block which houses mentally ill inmates at the facility.
Pearnel Charles Jr., State Minister in the Ministry of National Security, said the affected inmates have been relocated.
"The necessary protocols and procedures have been advanced to ensure that there are no issues arising. The police have also been on site to assist with securing the perimeter just to reassure and to ensure that there are no concurrent issues based on what has taken place here," the state minister declared.
The Department of Correctional Services said a correctional officer suffered mild smoke inhalation as a result of the fire.
