United States Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to oversee the two criminal investigations into former president Donald Trump's possession of national defense information at his Mar-a-Lago resort and his part in the 2021 US Capitol riot.
Former federal prosecutor Jack Smith will lead the investigations.
His appointment comes three days after Trump announced plans to run for president in 2024.
Trump has said the investigations are politically motivated and that he is the victim of a weaponization of the justice system.
