Guyana: Prisoners injured during fire at Georgetown Prison

Two prisoners were injured yesterday during a fire at the Georgetown Prison in Guyana when one of them set fire to a mattress in his cell.

The Guyana Prison Service said the inmate is of unsound mind and serving a prison sentence for rape.

Senior Superintendent Olivia Cox said the situation was quickly brought under control by the officers who were on duty.

The offender and another inmate, who is also of unsound mind, were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
