Tyquendo Tracey and Dennis Gordon spoke with Radio Jamaica Sports reporter Spencer Darlington in Budapest.
Former national champion Tyquendo Tracey is peeved at his non-selection in Jamaica team for the heats of the men's sprint relay at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Tracey, who placed fifth in the 100m final at the national trials, vented displeasure over his non-involvement in the major part of the preparation so far for the sprint relay as he spoke with Radio Jamaica Sports reporter in Budapest, Spencer Darlington.
“Nobody knew that even [Kadrian] Goldson was on the team until we got to Budapest. And if he's going to select him under the pretence that he ran maybe a bit faster than me, we can also think about Kishane [Thompson], Julian Forte and Yohan Blake who have run faster," Tracey argued.
The 30-year-old believes more emphasis should be placed on final positions at the national championships and not discretion, which he believes is being used in this situation.
Radio Jamaica Sports understands that World University Games 100m champion Kadrian Goldson, who finished seventh at the trials, will be included in the four for the heats of the men's sprint relay.
“When we got here, I was doing a lot of baton passes. I was being focused on the third leg. And then all of a sudden, from what I noticed, when they messed up with what they did in the mixed relay because they did not put the best team out there...everyone is now trying to put their best foot forward for whatever event it is."
"So for right now, they are saying that, okay, they want to put the best team out there... So I'm saying, okay, if you want to put the best team out there for the 4x1, put the top four. But they are trying not to do that and include Goldson in the 4x1, which to be honest, from what I know and based on the competition, we're not weak, the 4x1. So we can run any four out there and still make this final, and make this finals comfortably," said Tracey.
JAAA media liaison officer Dennis Gordon explained to Radio Jamaica Sports the policy surrounding the selection of the four for the sprint relay heats.
“The JAAA selection criteria allow for the first three past the post, to be mandatory. All the other three positions are discretionary," he pointed out, adding that "Coach Graham is in charge of the men's 4x1, and he would have sat down and have dialogue with the technical leader as to who he prefers. It is not the technical leader call. It is Coach Graham's call. The technical leader rarely override the coach (sic)."
Gordon said he will look to arrange a meeting between Tracey & coach Lennox Graham who has responsibility for the men's sprint relay team.
Jamaica's teams for the first round of all relays are expected to be announced on Thursday.
