Discussions are underway to make grants available to athletes who fall on hard times due to unforeseen circumstances.
According to Sports Minister, Olivia Grange, with the current coronavirus pandemic putting a halt on all sporting activities for several months, athletes across the world experienced a financial hit due to loss of earnings.
Minister Grange says the government is currently exploring ways to help athletes should they suffer a similar fate in the future.
She says athletes have reached out to the ministry.
The Athletes Assistance Programme was one way the government helped athletes preparing for the Olympic Games.
But, with the Games postponed until 2021, the programme was discontinued at the end of March for able bodied athletes and April 30 for paralympic athletes.
