Reid among the highlights on opening day of Central Champs

Hydel's Alana Reid defeated World Under-20 silver medallist Serena Cole to be among the standout performers on day one of the Central Athletics Championships at the GC Foster College on Wednesday.

Reid clocked a brisk 11.39 seconds, as Edwin Allen's Cole eased down for silver in 11.93 and St Catherine's Kamaria Knight clocked 12.12 seconds for bronze.

The world Under-20 200 metre bronze medallist Reid's time was made more impressive by the fact that it was run into a 2.3 metre per second head wind.

Manchester's Javoon Blair won the boys equivalent in 10.70 seconds into a negative 1.8 metre per second wind, ahead of clarendon College's richard nelson 10.81 and Tajai Duffus 10.88.

St Jago's Jevaughn Pinnock was in meet record form, clocking 52.35 seconds to take the class 1 400 metre hurdles ahead of Edwin Allen's Tyrece Hyman who was also below the previous meet record as he clocked 52.52 seconds. 
The previous mark was 52.93 set by Shamar Brown in 2020. St Jago's Jaheene Bell took bronze in 53.27.

In the meantime, World Under-20 4 by 400 metre relay silver medallist Rickiann Russell of Holmwood Technical, clocked an impressive meet record 51.47 seconds to win the Class 1 girls 400 metres.

Russell beat Hydel's Onieka McAnuff who was also below the meet record in second in 51.94 seconds and Kacian Powell who took bronze in 53.28.

Another World Under-20 championships silver medallist, Delano Kennedy of Edwin Allen, won the Class 1 boys equivalent in a season's best 46.59 seconds

Holmwood Technical lead the girls standings with 155 points ahead of Hydel in second with 147.5 points and Edwin Allen third with 143 points.

On the boys’ side, reigning champions St Jago lead with 164 points, Edwin Allen sit second on 95 points and Manchester High are third with 64 points.
