2024 a bad year for coffee, says industry official

Managing Director of the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory Norman Grant says this has not been a good year for the coffee industry.

Production of both High Mountain and Blue Mountain Coffee tumbled by almost 50%, from 150 thousand boxes during the period August to November 2023 to only 76 thousand boxes during the corresponding period this year, he revealed.

Mr Grant said, in financial terms the industry lost a total J$1 billion due to flooding and poor road conditions.

He added that a meeting will shortly be held with Agriculture Minister Floyd Green to again highlight the urgent need for the government to provide a billion dollars in assistance to the sector over a five-year period.
