Alcoa ratings could be downgraded

The worsening global financial crisis continues to take a toll on the bauxite/alumina industry.

Ratings agency Moody's Investors Service said it may downgrade the ratings on Alcoa Incorporated.

Alcoa operates the Clarendon-based Jamalco alumina refinery in a joint venture with the Government of Jamaica.

Moody's announced on Monday that the downgrade was likely due to an expected weak mid-term performance.

Moody's placed Alcoa's senior unsecured ratings and its short-term ratings under review for possible decline.

About $7.2 billion in rated debt securities could be affected.
