Jamaica will celebrate 63 years of Independence today at the National Stadium in Kingston with the annual Grand Gala involving more than 2,500 participants.
The celebrations will be staged under the theme 'Be Proud, Be Bold, in Black, Green and Gold'.
The event is organised by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sport through the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission.
Portfolio Minister Olivia Grange told the Jamaica Information Service that the several uniformed groups and dancers will be among the 2500 participants in this year's celebration.
The show will also feature a special highlight section on the inscription of Port Royal as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Segments of the Grand Gala will also celebrate reggae music, most notably with the presentation of this year's Reggae Icon award recipients.
Minister Grange says the government will be recognising three outstanding, internationally established reggae artistes – Leroy Sibbles, Capleton, and Beres Hammond.
They will be presented with the Reggae Icon award by the Prime Minister.
