The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) says it wants more assurances that Jamaican sugar workers will not be replaced by Chinese labourers at the three sugar estates that were recently sold.
Last Friday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding and representatives of the Chinese firm, Complant, signed documents to seal a multi-million dollar deal for the acquisition of Frome, Monymusk and Bernard Lodge Sugar factories.
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, the BITU said it was concerned about the quality of human resource management and development that the company will bring to the divested entities.
The union says it is still questioning whether the Jamaican sugar workers will be gradually replaced by Chinese workers despite assurances from Agriculture Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, and other stakeholders in the Ministry.
The BITU says the experiences associated with the construction of the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium in 2006 cannot be ignored in which multiple Chinese workers were expatriated to work on the project.
As a result, the union is seeking an early meeting with the new management of the sugar factories to lay the foundation for industrial peace and increased productivity.
