Caribbean firms are seen as prime targets for cyber criminals, according to expert analysis.
Ian John, CEO of Cyber Security Management Firm CYBEREYE, says companies in the region must boost their expenditure on cyber infrastructure in order to combat this threat.
The region is seen as an easy target because "companies have not made the investments in cyber secutityy, and that investment is a combination of information security management programmes, and... also the awareness and the training to ensure that staff and persons are trained and they are aware of how to practice good cyber hygiene," he said.
Implementing the right technology to protect the business is critical, he stressed.
In a similar vein tech expert Trevor Forrest is urging companies to allocate up to 35 per cent of their budgets to cyber security.
He added that there are several other steps that must be taken beyond greater expenditure: "You have to come up with plans; you have to have the strategies, you have to do risk assessments... You also have to train and make your employees aware.
In that regard, he said 85 per cent of cyberattacks are caused by "the weakest link in a business; the employee."
