Gov't moving ahead with plans to relocate Tinson Pen Aerodrome to NMIA

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness

Plans to incorporate lands occupied by Tinson Pen Aerodrome into the Port of Kingston are moving apace.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness, during his budget debate presentation, restated the plans to relocate the aerodrome to Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA).

Dr. Holness has said the realignment of the road to facilitate the expansion will ease traffic flow.

"The Airports Authority of Jamaica has completed the feasibility analysis and has been working with the Port Authority and the National Works Agency to bring the project to fruition. To facilitate the integration of the land into the port operations, the Marcus Garvey Boulevard is to be rerouted to the north of Tinson Pen. The realignment and reconfiguration of the road will eliminate bottlenecks in the traffic flow between Portmore and Kingston, specifically downtown Kingston," he noted.

Dr. Holness was addressing the groundbreaking and contract signing for the Westland Port Expansion Project at the Kingston Freeport Terminal on Thursday.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Holness said work has commenced to effect repairs to the roads in Newport West.

"The PAJ has been tasked to establish a public-private partnership arrangement, which would include the Kingston Wharves Limited, Shipping Association of Jamaica, the Jamaica Customs Agency and the National Works Agency to improve the conditions of the roadways. Eighty million Jamaican dollars (J$80 million) is being invested jointly by the partners, and the road improvement works are being overseen by the NWA with input in improving water and sewage facilities by the NWC."

The Prime Minister said work on that project started on June 20, and Minister with responsibility for Works, Robert Morgan, "is playing a critical role in ensuring that all the entities are coordinated".
