Plans are underway to reopen the Dragon Bay Resort in Portland, more than a decade after it was closed.
Daryl Vaz, Minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, says an agreement has been reached with Sandals Resorts. In his contribution to the Sectoral Debate on Tuesday, Vaz said the property will be expanded.
"The existing structure has 99 rooms and it is intended to expand it to between 200 to 300 rooms with a possible investment of up to US$150 million, with direct employment of up to 500 persons."
Vaz also disclosed that the expansion of the runway at the Ian Fleming Airport in Boscobel, St. Mary will be critical to the re-opening of the Dragon Bay resort.
"The extension of the runway could be a game changer, not only for the parish of Portland and St. Mary, but the northcoast, with easier access to the tourism belt...." he said.
