Government to establish health insurance scheme for tourism workers

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has announced that the government will be drawing down some $2 billion (one-third of the $6 billion currently available in the Tourism Pension Fund) in order to establish a health maintenance organization for the workers in the industry.

He said that this organization will create a health insurance scheme for every worker in the industry.

Mr Barlett added that this is part of a broader strategy to bolster the level of social protection through the combination of retirement benefits with the availability of affordable health care.

He added that the law related to the pension fund will be amended so that a portion of the workers' contribution to the pension scheme goes directly to the health fund in order to keep it growing.

The Tourism Minister also announced a new policy which will require all future hotel developers building more than 500 rooms to provide affordable housing units for their workers.
