The Spectrum Management Authority has begun preparing for telecommunication service providers to introduce 5G broadband technology in Jamaica.
Technology Minister Daryl Vaz told the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives last week that some of the infrastructure work is already being done, but according to him, some of the providers do not seem eager to implement the technology.
Mr. Vaz was questioned by opposition members of the Committee, Phillip Paulwell and Anthony Hylton, about the supporting policy to drive the introduction of 5G.
He admitted that some areas of that process will have to be expedited.
In the area of emerging technologies, 5G is the latest step in telecoms and broadband communications, which allows for faster searches and downloads via the internet. It also allows for faster connection of devices and the introduction of a wide range of features as part of the "internet of things".
