June deadline for businesses to enact sexual harassment policies

Gender Affairs Minister Olivia Grange

Businesses operators in Jamaica must enact their own Sexual Harassment Policies by June, to be compliant with the country's Sexual Harassment Protection and Prevention Act.

Gender Minister Olivia "Babsy" Grange recently gave a reminder that the Act, which came into force last July, gave all entities one year to establish and issue a policy statement in writing, concerning the prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Miss Grange, speaking last week at the opening of a new warehouse for pharmaceutical company, R.A. Williams, in St. Cahterine, said there are a number of elements that the internal policies must include, one of which is a definition of sexual harassment, "which is consistent with the Sexual Harassment Protection and Prevention Act."

It should also include a statement affirming that workers, clients, students, among others, are entitled to "an environment that is free of sexual harassment," and that disciplinary measures will be taken against any person under the direction of the employer, or the person in charge of the institution," who subjects such persons to sexual harassment.

She added that the workplace regime should also include the complaint mechanisms available to workers, along with a pledge to confidentiality.
