The University of the West Indies Mona, which recently resumed its position as sole shareholder in News Talk 93 FM, is pressing ahead with plans to restructure the broadcast media house.
Professor Gordon Shirley, Principal of the Mona Campus, says the current objective is to improve the performance of the station and to continue on the path of achieving several objectives.
Addressing a recent meeting with Newstalk 93 FM staff, Professor Shirley clarified the factors which led to university's resumption of control of the station.
He also reminded the employees of the objectives at the time Universal Media Company was formed.
The UWI Head said some of the objectives have been partially realised.
These include expanding and broadening listenership, which has been partially achieved and taking advantage of UWI's content portfolio, such as conferences and cultural and sporting events.
Professor Shirley also highlighted the issue of the station being a financially-sustainable operation by Year Three, which is yet to be achieved.
In the meantime, under the new arrangement an interim station manager is to be appointed on a short term basis, and financial control and oversight provided by the University Mona's internal staff.
Professor Shirley noted that existing programmes would be reviewed to determine how the quality of the station's offering could be strengthened.
Additionally, sales and marketing processes as well as operating practices and human resource issues are to be reviewed.
