OUR encourages public to sell electricity

As oil prices push up electricity charges in Jamaica, the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) has called for the public to comment on plans to introduce "net billing" contracts, to access the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) power grid.

Net billing is a programme under which a utility company buys excess electricity generated by a customer from renewable energy systems.

To use net billing, the customer's generation must be interconnected with the utility grid through a meter which registers the amount of electricity used from the grid, as well as that produced and sold to the grid.

This means a JPS customer who uses solar or wind power to supplement JPS-distributed electricity, can sign a contract with the power company to sell excess electricity to the power grid.

The move to introduce net billing comes after years of talk, but has grown more urgent as higher oil prices push up electricity bills for March by 10%.
