Rusal exploring sale of its Jamaica and Guyana assets

Russian aluminium producer Rusal is reportedly exploring the sale of its assets in Jamaica and Guyana, including the Windalco alumina complex.

Bloomberg reports that Rusal has started sounding out potential buyers, although the process is at an early stage and there is no certainty that a sale will take place.

Windalco has an annual alumina capacity of about 502,000 tonnes while Rusal's Bauxite Company of Guyana has capacity of more than 2 million tonnes of bauxite annually.

The Guyana operation has been inactive since 2020, when Rusal suspended operations following industrial unrest.

Rusal acquired its interest in Jamaica and Guyana as part of a strategy to secure bauxite and alumina for its aluminium operations.

The reported move comes as the company reshapes its global supply chain amid restrictions affecting Russian metals and loss of access to some major sources of alumina.

Rusal has not confirmed that it will sell the Jamaican and Guyanese assets and the company declined to comment on the reported plans.
