Jamaica’s Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) wants pending amendments to the legislation governing the sector to be in place in time for next month's football World Cup.
Gary Peart, BGLC Chairman, expects that when the changes to the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act are enacted, sports betting in Jamaica will expand.
The amendments will also regulate Internet gaming which generates more than 250 million dollars in bets annually.
Mr. Peart believes that a June enactment is possible, given that the bill has already been tabled in the House of Representatives and has gone through the requisite ‘first reading.’ He told RJR’s Financial Report that he expects the other phases of the legislative process to be completed and the bill enacted “in time for the World Cup, which is June 12.”
The amendments “will actually help to enhance sports betting – telephone and text betting, and also mobile and some other changes,” he explained.
