US based ride hailing app Uber has expanded to Western Jamaica.

After becoming available in Kingston in 2021, Uber is now offering service out of  Montego Bay, through the introduction of Uber Taxi.

According to Carolina Coto, Senior Communication Manager for Uber in the Caribbean and Central America, the service will also be available in other sections of St. James, along with parts of Hanover, Westmoreland, Trelawny, and St. Ann.

She expressed pleasure at the expansion of service, noting that more than 21,000 locals and visitors had attempted to use the app long before its introduction, from as far back as 2021.

"This shows a strong interest in using Uber's technology and the potential to support this key tourist area, which is vital to the country's economy," she observed.

Uber Taxi is a collaboration between Uber and the Montego Bay-based Maxi Taxi Association.

Gregg Connell, the Association's President, said it was "excited to join forces with Uber, to transform the experience for tourists," adding that "by integrating Uber's advanced technology, our drivers will enjoy enhanced safety and increased earnings on every ride."
