Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. has confirmed that 15,156 Jamaicans gained employment in Canada, and USA last year, under the Overseas Employment Programme, administered by his ministry. This was 687 more than during the year 2024.
The minister disclosed on Tuesday that 59 per cent participated in the seasonal agricultural workers programme; three per cent in the low skills segment and 38 per cent in the broader United States programme.
He asserted that these are not just numbers; they represent livelihoods, children that have been supported and communities that have been strengthened.
He therefore stressed that it is because of the programme's importance to the country and society that the programme must be protected.
Mr Charles was ddressing a batch of 98 farm workers who left the island on Tuesday.
Another 85 workers were also scheduled to leave for Canada on Wednesday.
