The death of a 16-year-old boy in a case of suspected suicide in Stettin district in Trelawny on Sunday is believed to have stemmed from being bullied by his peers.

Jhamar Surgeon, also called 'DJ', was found in the kitchen at his home about 3 a.m.

The police were alerted and Jhamar was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was a great 11 student of Holmwood Technical High on the Trelawny/Manchester border.

His stepfather, Leroy Melbourne, said the family has been left distraught, as the teen was his usual quiet but jovial self up to Saturday.

Mr. Melbourne said it is suspected that Jhamar was troubled by issues outside the home based on a note and the contents of a book he left behind.

Following a similar incident involving a 13-year-old boy earlier this month in Hanover, the Child Protection and Family Services Agency urged schools, parents and communities to work together to foster safe environments where children feel valued, protected and supported.

Chief Executive Officer Laurette Adams-Thomas also appealed to communities to take bullying, serious and pray a role in prevention.
