A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck in the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening, approximately 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands, prompting a tsunami advisory for several nearby countries.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor occurred at 6:23 p.m. EST, roughly halfway between the Cayman Islands and Honduras.
The earthquake's epicenter was located about 125 miles south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands at a depth of approximately 6 miles.
The seismic event has placed Haiti, Belize, and The Bahamas under a potential tsunami threat, according to NOAA, while Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have been issued a tsunami advisory.
There has been no report of injuries or significant damage in any of the affected areas.
