About 1,500 people evacuated as flooding hits northern Italy

A city official on Friday said one person is dead and some 1,500 people were evacuated from their homes after heavy flooding and landslides hit the northeastern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.

The weather system devastated the region on Wednesday.

Officials have described the situation as a full emergency.

The strong winds and rains also swept across central and eastern Europe, killing 24 people.

Schools closed and trains were cancelled Thursday as the rains lashed the same area hit by two floods in May 2023, which killed 17 people and caused billions of euros in damage.
