Abusive language case against West Portland MP postponed

The case against West Portland Member of Parliament and State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Daryl Vaz has been postponed.

The case came up for mention again this morning but the Prosecution was still not ready to present its case.

The matter will again be heard on May 21.

Mr. Vaz turned up at the Buff Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning without legal representation.

The Junior Minister appeared in court last month on charges of using abusive language to the police.

The case was then put off as the file was incomplete.

The police have accused him of using abusing them verbally during an incident in Buff Bay, on the day of the Local Government Elections in December.

Mr. Vaz is also charged with obstructing the police and unlawful assembly.

When our news centre contacted Mr. Vaz on Monday night he said he intends to clear his name in court.

Members of the Portland Police were reportedly confronted by Mr. Vaz when they went to shut down a street dance which was being held in celebration of the Jamaica Labour Party's victory in the General Election on September 3.

The incident sparked a heated exchange between the Junior Minister and the police officers.
