Education Minister Dr Dana Morris Dixon is defending the Jamaica Teaching Council bill following mounting criticism led by the parliamentary opposition.

The bill was passed in the Senate on Friday.

It seeks to establish the Jamaica Teaching Council, which will regulate the teaching profession and issue licences.

But the Opposition has raised concerns about some provisions in the bill that it believes may impose burdensome requirements on educators.

The PNP has also questioned whether the bill is being rushed.

Dr Morris Dixon said the JTC bill has been in development for more than 20 years and subjected to a high level of scrutiny.

She said, while questions about the bill are welcome, there have been misplaced concerns about the impact it will have on the teaching profession.

Despite such pushback, Opposition Spokesman on Education Damion Crawford continues to poke holes in the JTC Bill.

Senator Crawford, speaking Tuesday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said the requirement for  teachers to present a police record every five years before being able to be registered is unnecessary and onerous.
