Chief of the Accompong Maroons Richard Currie has called for calm following the delay of the Maroon elections which was due two weeks ago.
In a post on Instagram on Thursday, Chief Currie explained that the postponement was caused by extensive damage from Hurricane Melissa last year, which affected the livelihoods of communities in Accompong.
He said the enumeration process, originally set for November 2025, was delayed, and urged the diaspora and stakeholders to be patient and supportive.
"We are now in the process of completing the establishment of the Electoral Committee and the assignment of the Electoral Office in order for a free and fair process to be unfolded. So I ask that the external and diaspora as well as Maroons locally appreciate the considerations that have been taken and put in place to ensure that the process still moves along," he appealed.
Under the Accompong Constitution, elections cannot be postponed for more than three months.
If the chief fails to call elections within this period, the Maroon Council may set a new date with a two-thirds majority vote.
Section 2 of the Maroon Constitution also requires the Electoral Office to notify the Electoral Committee once the enumeration review is completed.
Elections in Accompong are held every five years on February 18 or the following Monday if it falls on a weekend.
In the 2021 elections, Richard Currie defeated Colonel Ferron Williams to become chief.
