Alcoa completes post-Dean damage assessment

Alcoa Monday said it has completed a damage and impact assessment at its Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals alumina refinery and ports in Jamaica which were damaged by Hurricane Dean.

The company says the majority of the impact for Jamalco occurred at the port in Rocky Point, Clarendon, which will require significant repairs and support for shipping alumina while repair work is being done.

Alcoa says the work includes preparing storage for alumina.

The lack of storage is currently limiting production to 50 per cent of capacity.

Full operation is anticipated in November.

Alcoa says the impact of the hurricane including production loss is estimated at $10 million.

Jamalco is 55 per cent owned by Alcoa World Chemicals and 45 per cent owned by the Government of Jamaica.
