Alleged gang leader captured at St. Andrew school, charged

The police have formally charged a reputed gang leader who was held at a St. Andrew school on Easter Monday with a modified Glock 19 pistol and more than 50 rounds of ammunition.

Thirty-three-year-old Orlando Grant, otherwise called 'Rufus' or 'Glasses Man', of Grants Pen, St. Andrew, has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorised possession of ammunition.

Grant, who eluded the police for more than three years, is under investigation by the Major Investigation Division for other serious crimes, including a triple murder committed in 2022 in the Morgan Lane community.

The police report that about 8.10 p.m. an operation was conducted at the school where the accused was accosted and searched.

The police say a black Glock 19 9mm pistol with an extended magazine and one black Glock magazine along with 59mm cartridges were taken from a black bag the accused had in his possession.

The weapon was modified with an invisi-switch plate, designed to make it fire automatically, and is more popularly referred to as a chip block.

Acting Superintendent Randy Sweeney, Commander for the St. Andrew North Police Division, described Grant's apprehension as a major success in curbing gang activities in Grants Pen.
