Today is the start of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) says its response systems are in a state-of-readiness.
Weather forecasters predict that the season, which continues until November 30, will be above average. Director General of the ODPEM, Major Clive Davis, says the agency is prepared having made adjustments following the 2017 hurricane season.
Forecasters predict a 70% likelihood of 10 to 16 named storms with winds of 39 miles per hour or higher. Of the named storms, five to nine could become hurricanes, including one to four major ones.
Hurricanes have winds of 74 miles per hour or higher and major hurricanes are considered to be at least Category 3. An average hurricane season has 12 named storms, of which six become hurricanes.
