The Inspectorate of Constabulary and the Independent Commision of Investigations (INDECOM) are investigating a fatal police shooting in Island Farm off Old Harbour Road in St. Catherine.

The incident occurred about midnight.

The security forces are maintaining a presence in the community which is now tense.

It is reported that a policeman shot 30 year-old auditor Navardo Dennis, a resident of Island Farm.

His aunt, who gave her name as Sandra, said some residents, including Mr. Dennis and his girlfriend, were at a birthday party when an argument developed and the policeman shot Mr. Dennis.

Deputy Superintendent Dahlia Garrick, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force Corporate Communications Unit, said the policeman reported being attacked and stabbed multiple times during the incident.

DSP Garrick told RJR News that the policeman said he shot Mr. Dennis in self defence.

"Reports that we have indicate that around midnight the policeman was walking along with a female when both of them were attacked. He was stabbed multiple times in the back, hands and he subsequently pulled his firearm and fired, hitting his attacker, who subsequently succumbed to his injuries," DSP Garrick revealed.

She said residents reacted by damaging two vehicles, one of which belonged to the officer involved in the shooting.

The policeman had to seek cover and call for assistance from the Old Harbour police station.
