Efforts are underway to clear the backlog at the Riverton Landfill caused by problems with heavy duty equipment used to cover the dump.

The equipment challenges resulted in a pile up of garbage trucks.

Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), told RJR News on Friday that the tractor used to spread the garbage had developed mechanical problems but had been fixed.

David Shaw, private garbage collector and managing director of Shaw's Haulage, told RJR News on Sunday night that the situation had still not been rectified.

In a subsequent interview Monday morning, Mr. Shaw said he has been informed that the situation is improving. He said one tractor is being used to clear the backlog while a second tractor should be fixed later on Monday so the situation should be back to normal.
