The Agriculture Ministry is seeking to assure local beef farmers that the reopening of beef imports to Jamaica should not drive them out of business.
The Government placed a ban on Canadian beef imports more than a decade ago, due to the Mad Cow disease. The ban was lifted this week.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Donovan Stanbury, says this does not automatically mean there will be an increase in imports. All it seeks to do is to increase the options as imports are allowed from the USA and other countries which are disease free.
