Barbados takes bold step to officially recognises Palestine as a state

Lobby group Caribbean Against Apartheid in Palestine has welcomed Barbados' decision to officially recognise Palestine as a state, adding that it is long overdue.

Secretary of the group, Lalu Hanuman, said the locally-based Caribbean Against Apartheid in Palestine has been lobbying for the recognition of Palestine since its inception in 2014.

On Friday, Barbados Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kerrie Symmonds disclosed that the Cabinet had made the determination that the time was ripe for it to have formal diplomatic recognition of the State of Palestine.

Mr Symonds noted that Barbados had formal talks with the State of Palestine in September last year, before the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip.
