Mayor of Black River and chairman of the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation Derrick Sangster has claimed that Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) contractors have been stealing streetlights in the parish and selling them.

The accusation was made Tuesday in the presence of JPS Area Manager for the Western Region, Janice Carr, during the Infrastructure Committee meeting of the municipal corporation.

Ms. Carr said the claim will be investigated.

Mr. Sangster said the theft of streetlights negatively affects councillors because they are blamed for the losses.

"They [the contractors] are taking out these streetlights, selling them for $30,000 or so a year and then we have to replace them out of our allocation. It affects us politically...because people don't cuss you, you lie down in your bed at night. It's me them cuss and call and wake at 5 o'clock in the morning," he complained.
