RJR News has been informed that unionised workers at the Bank of Jamaica have decided to continue their sickout. They called in sick on Monday to protest a salary adjustment exercise at the Central Bank.
The workers are claiming salary increases were only offered to managers and executive members last year. The last time non-management workers received an increase was in 2016.
President General of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union Kavan Gayle confirmed that the workers who called in sick included lower level staff, supervisory employees, and some at the managerial level. It's not yet known if the Ministry of Labour has called the parties to a meeting.
In the meantime, the Bank of Jamaica says the high absence of workers affected its banking and currency operations. Measures were put in place to minimise the impact.
The Central Bank has suspended the redemption of coins. It says it has not been notified of any industrial action by the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union.
