Bunting calls for accountability within JCF

By Halshane Burke

Opposition Spokesman on National Security Peter Bunting has called for accountability within the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Mr. Bunting said the country is seeing one of the highest murder rates in recent history without any clear crime fighting strategy.

The opposition spokesman has blasted the JCF and the government for what he calls their misplaced priorities.

"In the middle of this crime spiral, who is it the police strong for? The chairman of the Police Federation and the executive of the Police Federation, that is who them strong for. Instead of them out there dealing with the 60 persons murdered for this month alone, so far - five per day - them strong fi Police Federation, talking about accountability," he bemoaned.

Mr. Bunting was referring to the interdiction of Corporal Rohan James, Chairman of the Police Federation, for comments about overtime pay he made at a funeral service in July.

"The Federation chairman was speaking for the rank and file, insisting that the JCF High Command obey the order of the court. Him not begging any favour enuh, this is an order of the court," Mr. Bunting insisted.

He was addressing PNP supporters Sunday evening at a constituency meeting in South St. James.

PNP Deputy General Secretary Nekeisha Burchell is to represent the party in the seat in at the next polls.
