Utility providers paid customers $175M in 2024 for service breaches

The Office of Utilities Regulation has revealed that utility providers paid customers approximately $175 million in 2024 for service breaches.

Of that amount,  the electricity provider, JPS, paid $146 million to affected customers for breaches of the Guaranteed Standards.

An additional 44 million dollar payout is awaiting the Energy Minister's decision regarding JPS's force majeure relief request, due to Hurricane Beryl.

The National Water Commission reported that some customers were paid 25 million dollars in 2024, representing 40 per cent of the approximately $62 million in potential compensation.

The remaining amount not paid included those for which the affected customers did not submit the required claim forms.

Small water and sewerage providers also had to compensate some customers for guaranteed standards breaches, paying out a total 38 thousand dollars during 2024.

In addition, the regulator says, through its intervention, just under $4 million was secured as credits or compensation for utility consumers during 2024, an increase from the $1.8 million secured in 2023.
