Car scam mastermind faces the court today

An ex-convict who fleeced millions of dollars from government paid employees in a major motor vehicle racket is booked to appear before the Corporate Area Criminal Court this morning.

The accused, Horace Haughton, was charged last week by members of the Organised Crime Investigation Division, OCID.

Haughton, who also goes by the names 'Dean Haughton' and 'Dr Garcia Enriques Perez' has so far been charged with 63 counts of obtaining money by false pretence, involving nearly J$4 million.

However, investigators have linked him to more than 200 cases involving in excess of J$10 million and other charges are pending.

Reports are that Haughton, who was released from prison in September after serving more than six years for fraud, started a motor vehicle hire purchase scam in December.

It targeted government paid workers including police officers, members of  the military, nurses and teachers.

However, after he collected millions of dollars and failed to deliver the promised vehicles, the cops were called in.

After going into hiding and eluding the cops for more than two weeks,  Haughton was captured last week Wednesday.
